2005 SMITH WOOTON SYRAH
Tanner Vineyard lies on rocky, south facing slope in the Sierra foothills, in Calaveras County near Murphys. The grapes were crushed and fermented in small lots to preserve the varietal flavors. The wine opens with aromas of macerated black cherries, clove spice, and a bit of prosciutto. The fully rounded mouthfeel starts with Indian Mukhwas (a candy coated blend of fennel, anise, and sesame seeds) and moves into dense, concentrated blackberries and plum. The wine invokes images of a sultry northern Rhone wrapped in velvet arm in arm with the brute force of a California Syrah strapped in new chaps. The vineyard is situate at 2000 feet elevation in the Sierra foothills. Rocky, south facing slope with great drainage and long sun exposure. Hot days and cool nights. These are ideal climate and soil conditions for the Syrah grape.
