Smith Wooton Handcrafted Wines
Winemaker, Gary Wooton created SMITH WOOTON as a showcase for small lots of hand crafted wine. The label is a tribute to his parents, Evelyn Smith Wooton and Len Wooton. His latest releases are the 2005 SMITH WOOTON Cabernet Franc from Gallagher's Vineyard on Napa Valley's Silverado Trail and 2005 SMITH WOOTON Syrah from Tanner Vineyard in the Sierra Foothills near Murphys.
Wooton feels the crafting of fine wines is an art form. Each vintage starts in the vineyard, and each year the grapes provide new opportunities to craft wines to please your palate. SMITH WOOTON wines are 100% varietal. Grapes come from carefully selected vineyards with limited production.
2006 SMITH WOOTON CABERNET FRANC
Mature fruit makes 2006 SMITH WOOTON CABERNET FRANC big and bold with clear varietal character. Extended barrel aging enhances the tannin structure and adds to the wine’s aging potential.
Plum spice and cedar chest open the nose of this decadent 2006 Smith Wooton Napa Cabernet Franc. Plump boysenberry and blueberry preserves stand out on the palate with huge mouthfeel and young, savory tannins. This wine is a very intense, new-world expression of the grape that will come to show grace for many years. Truly gluttoness.
Enjoy this with roast duck and cherry sauce, grilled portabellas, pungent blue cheese, or dark chocolate.
"I've only had Smith Wooton Cabernet Franc a very few times in my life, but I remember the stuff tasting like floating through the night sky in a black velvet balloon..." Dara Moskowitz, City Pages
"Nirvana in a glass." Bill Ward, Taste
2005 SMITH WOOTON SYRAH
This Syrah is elegant and superbly balanced. Grapes come from Tanners Vineyard in Calaveras County. Its Sierra foothills origins enhance the true, varietal characteristics of the Syrah grape.
The wine opens with aromas of macerated black cherries, clove spice, and a bit of prosciutto. The fully rounded mouthfeel starts with Indian Mukhwas (candy coated fennel, anise, and sesame seeds) and moves into dense, concentrated blackberries and plum. The wine invokes images of a sultry northern Rhone wrapped in velvet arm in arm with the brute force of a CA Syrah strapped in new chaps.
